The courts in Pakistan have a rather bad reputation. The anti-terrorism courts are notorious for letting lose individuals who are strongly suspected by the law enforcement agencies of committing terrorist activities resulting in the deaths of dozens of civilians. It is almost impossible to get even a known terrorist convicted in our courts despite the pile upon pile of evidence. Consider two recent examples. The courts have become infamous for setting lose a known terrorist and criminal, Shahzain Bugti, who entered Quetta fully loaded with all kinds of weapons – rocket launchers, rifles, machine guns, anti-aircraft guns etc. This vile man was arrested by paramilitary troops of the Frontier Corps at the Buleli check post and every kind of weapon was recovered from his entourage. Yet the anti-terrorism court transferred this case, arguing this was not a case of terrorism and, as such, it did not fall under their jurisdiction. The fact that this man had also recently given an open call in the media for the killing of Pervez Musharraf, offering a reward of millions to the killer, also did not matter. Incitement to murder is perfectly acceptable to Pakistani courts. Subsequently, this murderer was released on bail by the High Court. Consider also the case of two innocent brothers who were murdered in broad daylight by a wild crowd in Sialkot. This brutal episode was recorded by a number of people on their cell phones. The clips are available all over the internet. However, till this day the known murderers remain unpunished.

It, therefore, comes as no surprise to learn that the anti-terrorism court, coming from a tradition where courts have such a ghastly record, has recently issued a warrant for the arrest of Pervez Musharraf in the assassination case of Benazir Bhutto. They could have summoned Pervez Musharraf or issued a notice rather than immediately take the extreme measure of issuing an unbailable arrest warrant. Only in Pakistan can we have such drama and open judicial madness.

Here I will briefly consider the “balance” of our courts, critically analyse the specific conspiracy theories implicating Pervez Musharraf in the assassination, and highlight the baboonish “logic” underlying the various conspiracy hypotheses.

First, can we really expect justice from the courts, particularly when it comes to Pervez Musharraf? Consider the nature of the verdicts delivered by the current Chief Justice almost immediately upon his restorations:

• Release of PML-N’s Javed Hashmi from prison (3 August 2007) – first restoration decision
• Allowed Nawaz Sharif to return to Pakistan in violation of his signed agreement to remain in Saudi Arabia for 10 years – first restoration decision
• Taking a range of suo moto actions which virtually paralyzed the functioning of the government – first restoration decision
• Permitting Nawaz and Shahbaz Sharif to take part in politics
• Removal of the hijacking case against Nawaz Sharif without questioning the eyewitnesses
• Release of known terrorists: Abdul Aziz and Sufi Muhammad, both arrested under Musharraf’s government.

Is it at all likely that the Chief Justice would have taken these sort of decisions prior to his falling out with Pervez Musharraf? Is it likely that the courts are hell bent to extract their petty revenge from Pervez Musharraf?

However, let us put all the above aside and focus only upon the case in question. At the time of Benazir Bhutto’s assassination, Pervez Musharraf was the President of Pakistan, having given up the post of Chief of Army Staff a while back. Does the President of any State micro-manage? Is the President responsible for the security of individuals and the one who implements the security measures? Of course not. Mian Soomro was the interim Prime Minister at the time and the Chief of Army Staff was Ashfaq Pervez Kiyani. The Prime Minister, not the President, controls the executive and the functioning. Neither was Pervez Musharraf in control of the Punjab government. As for the intelligence agencies, also being held responsible, they were under the control of Gen. Kiyani.

It makes no sense whatsoever to blame the President for the failure of a security system and its implementation because the security of an individual is not his responsibility. The law enforcement agencies on the ground are responsible for maintaining and implementing security and the ones involved in the planning also belong to the security apparatus. The President of a State, let alone Pakistan, has absolutely nothing to do with this.

Pervez Musharraf did not roll up his sleeves in order to put in place the bomb detecting sensors. He did not order the policemen on the ground to stand here or there. Neither did he sit down and select what particular vehicle was to be used by Benazir Bhutto and her entourage. Simply put, Pervez Musharraf had nothing to do with any of the security arrangements. He had no involvement precisely because he was the President and was, therefore, not responsible for anyone’s security, having also given up the post of Chief of Army Staff.

Therefore, right from the outset, it is pure folly and ridiculous to the extreme to blame Pervez Musharraf for the assassination of Benazir Bhutto. And if one is still adamant to blame Mr. Musharraf and drag him into this saga using one absurd argument or another, then perhaps one is also equally justified in personally blaming Asif Ali Zardari for the security in place to combat suicide bombings throughout Pakistan and the resultant loss of life.

Secondly, it is interesting to note that the workers of the PPPP were solely responsible for the immediate security of Benazir Bhutto. Rahman Malik was Benazir Bhutto’s security manager and a senior police officer was personally handpicked by her to see to her security. Why has the court not issued their arrest warrants? It is Benazir Bhutto’s team which mostly ignored and failed to implement a number of key security suggestions given to them by various officials from the US. For example, we are informed: “However, there was no indication that Bhutto’s team – including her husband, Asif Ali Zardari, who attended at least one of the meetings – had followed through on the most critical of the recommendations, including the hiring of private guards and reducing her visibility in large crowds like the one in Rawalpindi where she was killed.“ (NY Daily News National, The Associated Press, 31/12/2007).

Again, why has the court not issued the arrest warrants of those immediately responsible for arranging Benazir Bhutto’s security – people like Rahman Malik, Asif Ali Zardari and many other PPPP workers – and have, instead, issued an arrest warrant for the one man who was in no way responsible for Benazir Bhutto’s security – Pervez Musharraf?

Thirdly, we know that Benazir Bhutto’s brother, Ghulam Murtaza Bhutto, was assassinated when she was the Prime Minister of Pakistan. Fatima Bhutto, the daughter of Murtaza Bhutto – in fact, her entire family – continues to consistently blame Asif Ali Zardari for ordering the murder of her father through the police. Here one is on far firmer ground when holding the late Benazir Bhutto and her husband responsible because the former happened to be the Prime Minister at the time, with full control of the executive and the functioning of the State. Her police force killed Murtaza Bhutto. Why are the courts not willing to launch an investigation into this? Why can we not have a UN enquiry into this mystery? Does it make sense to spend millions on a UN investigation to look into the possibility of Zardari ordering the murder of his enemy brother in-law or does it make more sense to spend millions on a UN report to desperately blame Musharraf – the President at the time – for the assassination of Benazir Bhutto when we know he was not responsible for her security? I would rather spend millions on investigating Zardari.

Fourthly, let us consider the common allegations heaped by the hate-mongers:

1. The crime scene is said to have been cleared and hosed down within two hours of the attack. It is asserted that this was done deliberately in order to destroy crucial forensic evidence.

Response: Are we to suppose that Pervez Musharraf rang a security official on the ground and personally ordered him to quickly hose down the area? A far more commonsensical scenario is as follows: the area where the suicide attack occurred is usually busy with traffic and the local authorities, on their own, decided to hose it down after they were reasonably certain that they had collected and secured the required evidence. This was not a unique occurrence. After virtually every suicide bombing in Pakistan – down to this very day – we witness the local authorities hosing down the affected area within a few hours. At most and at worse, this is a case of negligence by the local authorities (something also acknowledged by Pervez Musharraf). We should not read too much into it.

2. There was scant police protection and no security cordon as Bhutto left the Rawalpindi rally.

Response: This is a lie. The truth, however, is that four police mobiles were provided to Benazir Bhutto comprising 30 personnel led by an officer she had hand-picked. Over 1,000 policemen had been deployed at Liaquat Bagh. There were about five walk-through gates and a bulletproof rostrum and policemen had been stationed on the roofs of nearby buildings. It was the responsibility of the PPPP’s leadership to have ensured that Benazir Bhutto did not expose herself to unnecessary risks. The suicide bomber was unable to enter the ground itself precisely due to the high security measures. He only acquired the opportunity to come close to her and strike when Benazir Bhutto was making her way back home. This is the time when one is most vulnerable to attacks, for being on the move from one location to another. Had Benazir Bhutto not come out of the escape hatch of the car, she would have been almost certainly alive (much like her colleagues in the car).

Moreover, consider the construction of the car itself:

“It is also important to comment upon the construction of the vehicle. It was fitted with B6 grade armour and designed to withstand gunfire and bomb-blast. It is an unfortunate and misleading aspect of this case that the roof escape hatch has frequently been referred to as a sunroof. It is not. It is designed and intended to be used solely as a means of escape. It has a solid lip with a depth of 9cm.” (Executive Summary, John MacBrayne, QPM Detective Superintendent Counter Terrorism Command, from cnn.com, “Scotland Yard report into assassination of Benazir Bhutto released,” IP-455 Press Release, 8 February 2008).

The above is particularly noteworthy as a few PPPP activists have also been going on and on about the inappropriateness of there being a “sunroof” in the vehicle.

Finally, even if we accept the worst case scenario, according to which the security was flimsy, we still find no evidence of an elaborate government conspiracy. Once again, we can blame the authorities for being negligent, clumsy and unprofessional; but that’s about it.

Some of the clumsiness, ineptness, and mistakes committed by the local police and authorities are being viewed and interpreted purely in terms of a conspiracy. It is as if no genuine mistakes can ever occur and there can be no such thing as genuine ineptness; everything which appears to be a ‘mistake’ is in reality a wilful act by design with an underlying sinister purpose.

3. Why was an autopsy not carried out?

Response: Benazir Bhutto was no ordinary person and disregarding the expressed wishes of her family would have led to more chaos and bloodshed in the streets of Pakistan. Let us not forget that her husband, Zardari (also the current President of Pakistan), had made it very clear, right from the start, that he and his family did not want an autopsy. Subsequent attempts to carry out a post mortem were also vigorously stopped by none other than Asif Ali Zardari, using the pretext that the family did not wish to see the body of Benazir Bhutto defiled.

Consider the type of large-scale destruction Pakistan witnessed almost immediately after the assassination. PPPP activists initiated large-scale killings, nationwide burnings, looting and plunder (mostly in Sindh). Imagine the type of reaction her autopsy would have elicited had it been carried out either without consulting her family or by disregarding their wishes. However, note that a conspiracy theory implicating the government still has no basis because an autopsy cannot show that the government of the time was somehow “involved” in the alleged scheme to kill Benazir Bhutto.

Thus, it would seem that the interim government had no ulterior motive in denying an autopsy. More importantly, Pervez Musharraf had stated clearly that if Zardari gave the permission, then the autopsy would be conducted. Why is it that the supporters of Benazir Bhutto did not pressurise Zardari to allow the autopsy? In a nutshell, supporters of Benazir Bhutto are upset because no autopsy was carried out, but they would also have been upset if the autopsy was conducted.

Moving along, we must ask, what motive did the government of the time have for wanting to eliminate Benazir Bhutto? Did the assassination benefit or harm that government? Certainly the latter. PML-Q lost the election, PPPP received a lot of sympathy votes, and PML-N was also able to win many more seats. Pervez Musharraf eventually resigned due to his weak position whereas Asif Ali Zardari, better known as Mr 10% throughout Pakistan, went on to become the President. Thus,
the opponents of Pervez Musharraf significantly benefitted from the death of Benazir Bhutto. Was the government so inept to realise that the elimination of Benazir Bhutto would merely make their situation significantly untenable? Why on earth would they be so desperate to kill Benazir Bhutto when she did not even enjoy wide-ranging support from the masses at the time? Yet even here our mentally challenged conspiracy theorists have a wondrous suggestion. It is claimed that on the day of her assassination, Benazir Bhutto planned to submit a “very sensitive” report to certain American officials listing evidence of the alleged “rigging” which was to be initiated by the government during elections (Saeed Shah, “Bhutto report: Musharraf planned to fix elections,” McClatchy Newspapers, 31/12/2007). This is gently pushed as a possible motive for her elimination.

Again, does this make sense? Couldn’t the government of the time just deny the allegations made within the report instead of going out of their way to kill Benazir Bhutto? Are we to believe that that government was incapable and unimaginative to think of a way to challenge the details and credibility of the report? Could not another member of the PPPP submit this report to the American politicians after the assassination? Or was it the case that there existed only one copy of this “very sensitive” report which Benazir Bhutto kept in a secret location? Did the government think that this report would vanish into thin air or become invisible after her assassination? What on earth is the proof and evidence to substantiate this allegation? Nothing. It would seem that in Pakistan you are only required to make an allegation and it will then magically transform into a fact.

Thus, we have nothing here apart from hearsay and even this does not appear to be a credible motive to kill Benazir Bhutto. The truth, however, is much simpler: Benazir Bhutto was killed by terrorists, who had already issued multiple threats against her life. Benazir Bhutto would probably have been alive had she not been so careless. She made a mistake and, as a result, had to pay for it with her life. She should not have poked her head out of the escape hatch.

From all that we know, suicide bombing (at least in our region and in the Middle-East) is the tool of religious extremists. From the outset, it makes sense to suppose that the ones responsible for a wave of suicide attacks in Pakistan – including attacks on President Musharraf, Shaukat Aziz (former PM) and Aftab Sherpao (former Federal Minister) – were also responsible for the suicide attack upon Benazir Bhutto. Afterall, it was a freaking suicide bombing.

It should be borne in mind that the terrorist Baitullah Mehsud is on audio tape congratulating his men for slaying Benazir Bhutto. This has been confirmed by the CIA as well, who have also recorded Mehsud congratulating his men. We then had the Scotland Yard report, which concluded Benazir Bhutto died as a result of a skull fracture sustained when her head collided with a blunt object – the escape hatch – from the force of the blast. Lastly, we even have the current Prime Minister, Yusuf Raza Gillani, on record stating that the killer of Benazir Bhutto, Mehsud, had been killed in a drone attack. So when we know that Benazir Bhutto died as a result of a suicide bombing, when we know she made a careless mistake by popping her head out of the escape hatch, when we know Baitullah Mehsud had claimed responsibility, and when we know that Pervez Musharraf was no longer in control of the security apparatus and the executive, what sense does it then make to issue his arrest warrant and to blame him?

Within a matter of hours after Benazir Bhutto’s assassination, conspiracy theories began surfacing like wild fire all over Pakistan. Of course, in every society we find conspiracy theories. However, the
situation becomes dangerous when the courts are also infested with conspiracies and are seen to be operating with a clear agenda.

Only through judicial madness can the courts find Pervez Musharraf “guilty.” They have already taken the first step towards judicial madness by issuing an arrest warrant. If we think rationally and simply stick to the facts, there is no way we can hold the President of the time “responsible” for the assassination and/or the alleged lack of security. However, if we decide to ditch commonsense, reason and evidence, only then can we find numerous ways to drag in Pervez Musharraf and hold him responsible for something which was not his responsibility by any stretch of imagination.

It is time for all Pakistanis to speak out against judicial madness which is taking place right in front of their eyes. It is time for the international community to exert pressure upon the Pakistani regime and ask them to avoid the path of petty revenge politics. PPPP and PML-N have already caused a great deal of harm to the Nation through their politics of revenge and blood in the 90’s. They are at it again. We cannot afford to remain silent. They are afraid about the prospect of Musharraf returning to Pakistan and once again putting hurdles in the path of their civilian dictatorship.

Letter of Protest

To: His Excellency Wajid Shamsul Hasan, High Commissioner of Pakistan to the U.K.

Your Excellency,

We gather today outside the Pakistan High Commission, in London, in order to hold a peaceful protest to express our deep concerns over the revenge politics being practised in Pakistan and the blatantly biased behaviour of our courts. We British Pakistanis are shocked and dismayed at how one man, the honourable Pervez Musharraf, is being targeted not only by the inept politicians but also by the highly politicised judiciary.

Rather than issuing a notice or sending Mr. Musharraf questions to acquire his clarification, the anti-terrorism court – with a rich history of letting lose known terrorists – took an extreme measure by issuing an unbailable warrant for the arrest of our former President.

It is no secret that at the time of the assassination of Benazir Bhutto, Mr. Musharraf was no longer in command of the army. He was solely the President at the time, having nothing to do with the running of the State. Mian Soomro was the Prime Minister, leading the interim Government. Moreover, Gen. Kiyani had assumed the office of Chief of Army Staff – maintaining full control of all the security agencies. Neither was Mr. Musharraf responsible for the management of the Punjab Government. Is the President responsible for the security of individuals and the one who implements the security measures? Of course not. What then is the justification behind his unbailable arrest warrant?

You know very well that none of this is driven with a desire to get to the bottom of the truth. Justice is not the underlying theme in these proceedings. Instead, it is only revenge, blood, and blind hate which happen to be the primary fuel behind these proceedings. Hate mongers, who wish only to extract their petty revenge even if it means harming someone innocent, are the ones involved in this ghastly drama.

It is no secret that the current Chief Justice supported the former President for the major part of the latter’s term in office. Iftikhar Chaudhry was one of the judges who legitimized Mr. Musharraf’s (rightful) takeover of the Government under the “doctrine of necessity.” He was also among the first judges to take an oath on the PCO in January 2000. It is interesting to note that on April 13 2005, Iftikhar Chaudhry was one of 5 Supreme Court judges who dismissed all petitions challenging Mr. Musharraf’s constitutional amendments. It was declared that the Legal Framework Order instituted by Mr. Musharraf, the 17th amendment which gave it constitutional backing, and the two offices bill which allowed Mr. Musharraf to retain his military uniform, were all legal.

Iftikhar Chaudhry only “changed” after 9 March 2007. Could it really be that all of a sudden he finally realised he had been “wrong” all along and that it was now time for him to do the “right” thing? Only a fool will swallow this false narrative. We strongly believe that judges like him, those who are fully politicised, are attempting to extract their revenge from Mr. Musharraf.

Why is there an absence of unbailable warrants when it comes to the killing of Murtaza Bhutto? Mr. Bhutto’s family remains adamant in accusing Zardari for the murder. Worse, we know the late Benazir Bhutto was the Prime Minister – and thus the one in full control of the running of the State – at the time of Murtaza Bhutto’s murder at the hands of her own police force. As if this was not enough, how about the fact that the workers of PPPP were responsible for the immediate security of Benazir Bhutto? Why do we see no unbailable warrants for Rehman Malik, Benazir Bhutto’s security manager? And what about the senior police officer personally handpicked by her to see to her security? It is Benazir Bhutto’s team which mostly ignored and failed to implement a number of key security suggestions given to them by various officials from the US (NY Daily News National, The Associated Press, 31/12/2007).

The fact of the matter is that Benazir Bhutto made a terrible mistake and was careless when she popped her head out of the escape hatch of the bomb and bullet proof vehicle and, thereby, made herself an easy target. Throughout her speech in the ground, no unfortunate incident occurred. This was precisely due to the high security. However, once out of the Liaqat Bagh ground, and once Benazir Bhutto made a mistake, only then was the suicide bomber able to achieve his target.
Both the current Prime Minister and President have admitted numerous times that Baitullah Mehsud was responsible for the killing of Benazir Bhutto. Why then is Mr. Musharraf being targeted? Moreover, Mr. Musharraf was himself targeted by terrorists on more than a couple of occasions. The same holds true for the former Prime Minister, Shaukat Aziz, and others. Can’t you see that the same terrorists who had a go at Mr. Musharraf also had a go at Benazir Bhutto?

We British Pakistanis urge the Pakistan government to put an immediate end to this politics of revenge in Pakistan. Targeting former opponents will do the nation no good. Using the judiciary to achieve your nasty political goals will get you nowhere. Pakistan will fail to progress and develop as a vibrant democracy if political opponents continue to be victimised and targeted in this grotesque manner.

The Pakistani people know very well the damage caused to the nation when time is wasted scoring political points and attacking political opponents by any means, fair or foul. Let us put an end to this ghastly tradition and eliminate it from our politics once and for all.

Finally, we urge you to move on and stop focussing your attention upon the honourable Pervez Musharraf. Musharraf-phobia needs to end. The Former President is no longer in power, nor did he commit any act, which justifies the manner in which he is being belligerently attacked at the moment. Pervez Musharraf gave a call towards national reconciliation when he was in power. He urged all political parties to get together for reconciliation, and this is his call even now. For the betterment of Pakistan, you must answer his call positively and promote reconciliation with all, including the former President. No one should be left out of this process, particularly the ones you have opposed the most in the past.

SAVING PAKISTAN!

Let me begin by apologising to everyone from the bottom of my heart for the delay in reporting back about the outcome of our pro-Musharraf protest which took place on 16 August 2009, outside the Pakistan High Commission in London. I accept full responsibility for the delay, which was caused due to work pressure and family commitments.

Alas, I present the report below for those who were unable to join us for this protest.

A call was made on this blog announcing the plan to conduct a pro-Musharraf protest in light of the vehement attacks launched against the former President in Pakistan. Soon thereafter, a number of volunteers came forward to assist with the planning and implementation of this protest. Thus six individuals, all either on full-time jobs or studying full-time, formed a group called the “Musharraf Supporters Alliance” in order to organise a pro-Musharraf protest on August 16 outside the Pakistan High Commission in London.

Having no experience under our belts of organising such an event, this was to be a tremendous learning experience for us. In hindsight, we did a fantastic job and plan to continue with our efforts in the future.

Mostly British Pakistani families attended the protest. At the peak we had a little over 100 people in the protest. For the major part, we had around 80-90 participants. To put this in perspective, a number of protests launched by PML-N supporters and, for example, supporters of Imran Khan, have usually gathered either 20 or so protesters or, at most, around 60 protesters. When “stars” such as Imran Khan and/or Jemima Goldsmith are present, the number of protesters usually goes up to around 100 or a little above. Given the fact this was our very first attempt, this was a very good start to say the least. Think of this as a warming-up session, with the bigger event coming your way soon after Eid.

The protest was given coverage by a number of media channels, including ARY, GEO, DUNYA, Star News, Russian News channel (channel #512 on SKY), and a few newspapers as well. According to the ARY reporter, although she claimed she was unable to ascertain the identities of the organisers, it was clear to her that the organisers were educated British Pakistanis. Furthermore, she continued, that the protesters were also lay British Pakistani educated people who had come out with their families to support the former President, with no affiliations with any political party. This, I think, was a good complement and we managed to convey a positive impression to others.

Please bear in mind that when the goons of the goon Nawaz Sharif, for example, conduct protests, their participants are political men and low-class hooligans. Families usually do not participate in their protests. In our case, in sharp contrast, many families had assembled outside the Pakistan High Commission to voice their support for former President Musharraf.

Shortly before the start of the protest, as the organisers were making some preparations, we were joined by an elderly Pakistani doctor who lived close to the Pakistan High Commission. He was opposing Musharraf and was inquiring why we supported him, though in a polite and non-confrontational manner. A number of organisers had a chat with him and subsequently, during the protest, the doctor displayed immense kindness by purchasing orange juices and sharing them with the protesters, who were chanting their slogans under the blazing sun with not a cloud in sight. The doctor was given copies of the material we had produced justifying our support for Musharraf and explaining the reason behind our opposition to Nawaz Sharif and Iftikhar Chaudhry.

The protesters were well-behaved, so much so that when at the end the organisers approached the police to thank them for their assistance, the police said that ours was one of the best-behaved protest they had the pleasure to monitor. In other words, those who support Musharraf were not only educated, but acted in a civilized manner, without causing any trouble and inconvenience to anyone.

This protest was a good start and a success to say the least. It drew out genuine supporters of Musharraf, supporters who want nothing in return and who adore and support the former President for the immense good he has done for Pakistan. The participants were the young, the old, male, female, and people voicing their support along with their families.

Protest in Support of Musharraf

Assalam Alaikum

Many Musharraf Supporters requested we organise a protest in support and defense of Musharraf. We have done precisely this and request all Pakistanis based in Britain to join us on 16 August at the above mentioned location for a peaceful protest outside the Pakistan High Commission. If you support Musharraf then you MUST come out.

This is the time to express and show your support for Musharraf, a man who did so much for Pakistan over the past 8 years. The least you can do is come out with your family and friends and say you admire Musharraf. The former President is being attacked and maligned daily by overly biased and sold out anchors and by known corrupt politicians. As if this was not enough, now Iftikhar Chaudhry and other members of the Judiciary being fully controlled by Nawaz Sharif are also playing an active role in extracting their petty revenge from Musharraf.

Enough is enough. If the above state of affairs depresses you and makes you sad, angry and annoyed, then you MUST assemble with us on August 16 outside the Pakistan High Commission in London.

On the internet so many people make constant demands for protests and rallies. Then on the big day itself, usually a minuscule number of these people participate in the event. Lets not allow this to occur. Such an outcome will only hurt the cause of Musharraf.

If there is even a slight bit of support, admiration and compassion in your heart for Musharraf, someone who did so much for Pakistan, then you WILL come out on August 16.

A few more words need to be added to expose one Kaukab Siddique. In an email, Mr. Siddique was asked (emphasis added):

The above were straightforward questions. Mr. Siddique had a wonderful opportunity to distance himself from the contents of his friend’s email, namely, the anti-Pakistan army rhetoric, the takfirs and and insults heaped upon the army, and the support of terrorist activities (suicide bombings in Pakistan). As expected, Mr. Siddique completely avoided giving a reply to the above questions. Instead, he issued the following irrelevant rant:

“I want to know both sides of the story.

I get propaganda published by Kayani’s man Maj. General Athar Abbas [a shi'ite] almost every day. Most of it is plain lies.

I also read European papers.

From Pakistan Taliban I have received this information which is very difficult to get.
You did not want me to know the Islamic perspective on the situation?”

There you go! In other words, he is saying YES!

To remind the readers, I had asked Kaukab Siddique to speak against the linked videos included in a mass circulated email by his friend “paktalib” under the following captions:

Not once did he speak out against the above blatant promotion of terrorism. Instead, he got upset only when I spoke against “paktalib@gmail.com” for proudly circulating the above filth and when I spoke against Siddique’s dearly beloved terrorists, the khuwarij Jahiliban.

The members of the group (be it in Afghanistan or in Pakistan) who insist upon calling themselves “Taliban” can, in reality, hardly be described as “taliban” or “students.” A student/talib is supposed to go to a school, college or university in order to acquire an education whereas the overwhelming majority of the members of this group have never been to a school, college or university in their lives. Some, to be precise, have indeed gone to schools – girl schools to be specific. They did not enter girl schools in order to gain an education alongside girls or for dating but for the purpose of burning down the schools and, in some instances, killing the school teachers as well.

Some among this group have attended classes in “madrassahs,” religious seminaries. But again, these seminaries are, as far as I can tell, unaccredited and have no scholarly standing whatsoever. They teach “students” the basics of Islamic belief, memorisation of the Quran and convey some basic information on the hadith and Shariah (Islamic law), within a highly charged environment containing a heavy dose of poisonous rhetoric about “the Jews,” America etc. That’s about it. A “graduate” from such a seminary can never be described as a “scholar” of Islam. He/she is still a million miles removed from attaining the position of a scholar. At most, such a graduate comes out with a rudimentary knowledge of foundational Islam, which has been processed through a lot of political anger and emotional rhetoric. This graduate is ahead of most Muslims on just one matter: in most instances, he/she has completely memorised the Quran.

Essentially, these people are unqualified, often possessing a low I.Q and lacking the basic skills to maintain a job, let alone having the desire to attain higher education (be it in Islamic studies or any other subject).

Based on the above, I regard one to be insulting and significantly downgrading the respectable term “talib/taliban” whenever it is applied to the particular group which occupied 90% of Afghanistan for some years and which is now committing mass murders in Pakistan. The correct term, in my view, to describe this group is: JAHILIBAN (plural). Singular would be: JAHIL. The word “jahil” means “ignorant” and since there can be little doubt that the mass murderers of Sawat are ignorant of Islamic law and often lack basic education, they are, therefore, JAHILIBAN.

Unfortunately, the respectable word “Taliban” has already been bastartised. The word is now firmly stuck to a specific group based in Afghanistan and Pakistan which does not regard women to be human beings, denies women education, makes instant takfirs, kills innocent people on the basis of any unsubstantiated allegation with no due process whatsoever, and which believes in the imposition of a highly crude form of “Shariah,” a type of Shariah which has probably never existed in 1400 years of Islamic history. Therefore, if in this and future papers I refer to them as the “Taliban,” then that does not mean that I genuinely consider them to be “taliban” (students). I am just using this as a word – WITHOUT MEANING – to identify a specific group, without attaching to it the actual meaning of “taliban.” Again, in reality, these people are JAHILIBAN and we should use this FACTUALLY CORRECT term more and more frequently in our writings and talks.

I would now like to inform you about my email exchanges with a few members of the “Taliban” – JAHILIBAN. Like most people, I maintain multiple email addresses. A few days ago I received two emails in one of my accounts from a person I know nothing about. I have no idea how he came to acquire my email. The email was sent to many individuals and my email address was included in the pile of emails. The email was sent from this address:

Judging from the email address alone, it is safe to assert that the owner, at the very least, regards himself to be a member of the Pakistani based “Taliban.” The contents of his emails were shocking. They contained pictures of the bodies of the shaheed (martyred) Pakistan army soldiers. The email praised the “Taliban” who had martyred the Pakistan army officers and contained a picture and praises for a suicide bomber. Moreover, the Pakistan army was labelled “Napak” (impure) army and were addressed as “murtadeen” (apostates from Islam). Most shocking, the email contained links to dozens and dozens of video clips uploaded on sites such as megafileupload.com, fdcupload.com, speedshare.org and many others. I did not dare check out these videos, but I am sure they contain clips of suicide bombings and killings of Pakistan army officers. In one of the email the clips were entitled as follows:

These videos are said to have been made and distributed by the “Nida al-Jihad Center for Media Production.”

Well then, after reading the above, I did the only intellectual thing I could do: I hit the “reply to all” button and went ahead to type a series of profanities in the email, calling this “paktalib” all the names in the book. I am absolutely proud and unrepentant of abusing him. But besides the abuse, I typed a lot of pro-Pakistan army slogans, praised the shaheed of Pakistan army, and issued curses on the Jahiliban, praying for them to rot in the lowest pit of hell.

I am sure all the above left paktalib@gmail.com emotionally scarred and traumatised for the remainder of his miserable (and hopefully short) life.

The most amazing part was the reaction I received from two Jahils, who are, no doubt, members of the Jahiliban. I paste below an email I received (my alias on the other account is “G.I. Joe” – bold original):

[Maulvi Fazlullah fought the Pakistani army to a standstill and created the situation in which Pakistan had to invite his father in law, Maulana Sufi, to head the movement for Shari'a in Swat. He leads the local Taliban and has solved hundreds of law cases in Swat and brought justice to the people of Swat.]

Notice Kaukab not once spoke against the Jahiliban. Not once did he speak against the takfir made on the Pakistan army, the abuse hurled towards them of being “Napak” (impure) army, and not once did he speak against the videos containing barbaric scenes of Jahiliban atrocities.

Instead, Kaukab got “upset” on only one issue: my words against the Jahiliban. He got upset when I said the Jahiliban were Khuwarij. So, he hit back defending them!

Subsequently I sent Kaukab an email giving him another chance to distance himself from the Jahiliban. I wrote:

To the above there has been no reply from Kaukab thus far, nor do I expect him to ever offer a reply. It is rather clear that he not only supports the Jahiliban, but he agreed with all of the nasty contents within “paktalib’s” email.

In fact, Kaukab had this to say when another Pakistani replied back in anger against “paktalib” for proudly distributing gruesome attacks on the Pakistan army:

Looks like “cancer” is quite out of touch with reality. Use of Amercan language shows that “cancer” is very angry.
He supports the army of General Kayani rented by USA. He does not know that it is the Pakistani Taliban who are fighting for Islam and Pakistan.

Kaukab uttered the above nonsense in the very same email thread on which nasty anti-Pakistani army videos were posted and multiple takfirs were made upon them, together with the praising of a hell bound suicide bomber who is said to have killed (rather, martyred) many Pakistani soldiers.

I will request all Pakistani patriots based in the U.S. to notify the F.B.I, the C.I.A, the Police and all relevant authorities about this “Dr.” Kaukab Siddique Jahiliban supporter. He may well be collecting funds from unsuspecting and innocent Muslims in the U.S. for the support of the Jahiliban.

The second unusual response to my email lambasting the Jahiliban came from one “Abu Taha” (email: abutaha@gmail.com ). Being a very good and observant Muslim, Abu Taha was irreversibly distressed after reading the forbidden profanities I had directed at “paktalib.” Abu Taha wrote:

are you muslim?? than why you do lot of abusing ??? your’s ULAMA said u! you can abuse in islam???

Let me get this straight: Abu Taha was, presumably, not the least bit distressed and disturbed by looking at pictures displaying the bloody bodies of the Shaheed Pakistan army officers; he was not upset by the gruesome uploaded videos proudly showing bloody scenes of barbarity; he was not upset when takfir was made on fellow Muslims (Pakistan army being labelled “murtadeen”) and he was certainly not upset when our army was addressed as “Napak” army. He did not dare utter one word against these acts.

But Abu Taha, the “good” Muslim, was traumatised by the foul words I directed at “paktalib” and the Jahilibans!

Suffice it to say that both allegations turned out to be outright lies.

This information is totally wrong … A pay order of Rs 376,108 was deposited in the name of XEN(E), Islamabad-1 on 24th March and another pay order amounting to Rs. 102,000 was submitted as security deposit.

As far as the electricity meter is concerned, the published bill clearly shows the date it was installed (Dec 2003). The plot is in the P & V scheme of CDA where an agriculture meter D-2(1) is installed in routine (by default) till a house is built on the plot for permanent occupancy. The farmhouse was occupied a few days ago and the new meter with A-1(b) tariff (for residential use) is in the process of being installed this week in place of the old meter as per the above-mentioned demand note.

A rough summary:

The reporter spoke to people in Chitral and was surprised to see them express their support for the former President, Pervez Musharraf. He spoke to a variety of people, people in shops to shop owners, and they all praised Musharraf. According to the reporter, Pervez Musharraf is more popular than most politicians in the Chitral area.

According to one Chitrali Advocate, a reason for this support is the multi-billion rupees construction of the 8 km long Lowari tunnel in Sawat during the Musharraf era. This tunnel is now virtually complete and once done, Chitral will no longer be cut off from the rest of Pakistan during heavy snow falls. According to the Advocate, for decades the people of Chitral dreamed the construction of such a tunnel and Musharraf turned their dream into reality. Furthermore, the Advocate proceeded, if Musharraf ran for elections from Chitral, he would easily receive the majority of votes.

Moving on, we are introduced to a Chitrali logger, one Ahmad Khan, who is said to be a friend of Pervez Musharraf. Khan said he loves Musharraf and has met him four times, eagerly showing his pictures with the former President.

According to Ahmad Khan, Musharraf is an honest and a brave man. Khan said he cried a lot when Musharraf was attacked by terrorists. But upon learning that Musharraf was safe, he distributed sweets in the bazaars of Chitral. Khan said he is a poor man who earns his living selling wood, but that day he spent money distributing sweets in Chitral.

Khan went on to say that he transformed his house into a polling station during the referendum and has not spoken to two of his relatives who voted against Musharraf.

Echoing the words of the above referred Advocate, Khan also said that Musharraf would easily win the elections where he to run from Chitral and expressed his joy if Musharraf entered politics.

Almost daily on all Pakistani political analysis programmes, we are bombarded by bravado proclamations that Musharraf is allegedly ‘hated’ and ”disliked’ by 170 million Pakistanis. Almost every politician from the PML-N, the PPPP, the ANP and the PTI makes such assertions and boldly parades themselves as representatives of the 170 million people of Pakistan, with no exception whatsoever. These discredited, hypocritical and lying politicians should be advised to visit Chitral. Unless, of course, they regard the people of Chitral to be ‘non-Pakistanis’ for daring to support Musharraf!

These lying politicians should also go out more and meet the Pakistani people since doing so would make it abundantly clear to them that many Pakistanis love, support and admire Pervez Musharraf. I support Musharraf and most people viewing this blog support Musharraf and most commenting here support Musharraf, many of our family members and friends support Musharraf and many of their family members and friends support Musharraf and on and on. How is it that we can so easily identify many Musharraf supporters from our immediate circles whereas Imran Khan, Zardari and Nawaz Sharif, for example, cannot spot a single Pakistani supporting Musharraf? We are all Pakistanis yet these politicians either refuse to accept our Pakistaniness or just ignore us by lying to be representatives of ‘all’ Pakistanis.

Every time a politician, with not so much as a thought, proclaims boldly to be talking on behalf of the 170 million people of Pakistan, let it be known that he/she is lying from their teeth.
